After a nearly two-week streak of sunny, 75-degree days, the morning of May 18th was a bit of a shock with its low temperatures and overcast skies. But not even threatening weather could stop Seattleites from celebrating the city’s annual Bike to Work Day (http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/ ).
CPW staffers prepare for Bike to Work day!
Community Power Works super-staffer Greta Hutchins was on site from the wee hours in the parking lot of listener-powered KEXP radio (http://blog.kexp.org/ ) to dole out Community Power Works bike seat covers to the first 300 lucky cyclists to pedal by the station, including Seattle’s Mayor Mike McGinn!
The event (http://blog.kexp.org/2012/05/18/hood-to-hood-ballard-bryan-john-appleby/ ), hosted by KEXP DJ John Richards (himself a bicycle commuter), featured a live outdoor broadcast of The Morning Show, a live performance by Bryan John Appleby in the bed of a pick-up truck, and bike tune-ups from Performance Bicycle.
Mayor McGinn also joined John on the air, and then rallied an enormous pack of cyclists and led the group downtown. What a great way to start the morning!
According to event sponsor Cascade Bicycle Club over 16,000 cyclists stopped by one of 43 official commute stations around Puget Sound throughout the day. We were so excited to be a part of this event, and we can’t wait to see all those Community Power Works bike seat covers out there.
See you all at the next great community event!
